Adult male American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) giving pump-er-lunk vocalization in spring. This vocalization is accomplished through inflation of the esophagus, during which the bird contorts itself violently. The call is repeated 1 to 10 times in succession and serves in territorial advertisement and mate attraction. Montezuma NWR, New York. May.
