Russian field biologist Egor Loktionov crossing a tundra pond while searching for arriving Spoon-billed Sandpipers in spring. Each day was spent hiking a series of Moraine hills and coastal spits where about a dozen Spoon-billed Sandpipers had nested the previous season (there used to be 70 pairs at this location). We were looking for displaying birds as they arrived, and later, nests. The birds are sparsely distributed over a large area and are very secretive once they are paired and have a nest. Chukotka, Russia. May.
