Spoon-billed Sandpiper

Dead female Spoon-billed Sandpiper lying beside 4 depredated eggs. Dwindling populations are often comprised of more males than females so the loss of a breeding age female is costly - 1% of all breeding females in one bite. It is not known why it was left uneaten or what killed it. The male that was paired to this female remained in the area for several days displaying in an effort to locate her or another mate. Chukotka, Russia. June.
